The WBO committee stripped undefeated pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather of his newly won welterweight championship after failing to comply to their rules.
Floyd Mayweather won the title from Manny Pacquiao in May when they met in their record-breaking boxing match. While the fight did not live up to expectations, the two received record pay days.
WBO expected Mayweather to vacate his other titles before receiving the WBO Welterweight Championship as it is against organization rules for a boxer to hold titles in different weight classes. Mayweather, a welterweight and light-middleweight champion, delayed vacating the belts as well as paying a $200,000 sanctioning fee to WBO.
Mayweather was given an extension to vacate his titles and pay the sanctioning fee, but failed to contact the WBO committee by the 4:30 deadline on Friday. WBO announced on Monday that they have vacated the WBO Welterweight Championship.[via]
